Chapter Thirteen

Though he’s been injured, he doesn’t seem to notice. He’s intent upon tending me, and he doesn’t appear to notice his own wounds.

“He took too much blood, didn’t he?” I ask, as he rips off my bloody shirt.

His lips tighten. “He will die for what he did here today.”

I smile, then gasp as a wave of dizziness hits me. My eyes cross and I close them, which makes the dizziness worse. My stomach tosses, and I concentrate on trying not to throw up.

Mossy is abruptly there, peering down at me, a cup in his hand. “I have sweet,” he says. “Lift her, Zac. This will help with not only the blood loss but the effects from the shocker.”

Zac climbs into the bed and lifts me against him. I’m sitting on his lap, my head against his chest, and more than anything, the warmth of his body, the essence of his soul, and the fierce beating of his heart against my ear immediately begins to make me feel better. Apparently, the closeness of one’s heartmate is better than any medicine.

But oh, the sugar. I don’t get much sugar here, and for a person with a sugar addiction, that’s one of the things I miss most. Cookies, cake, soda, ice cream…

The cup Mossy holds to my lips is a thick, syrupy juice, and I gulp it down and barely have time to wallow in the rush of deliciousness before he’s pressing what appears to be a square of chocolate fudge to my lips.

Chocolate. Fudge.

It’s the best thing I’ve ever tasted and along with the feel of Zac’s arms around me and his hard body at my back, I’m in heaven.

There’s no pain, the dizziness fades, and I’ve never experienced a drug that compares. “Wow,” I say. “Mossy, you’ve been holding out on me.”

He smiles. “Humans are quite susceptible to our treats.”

“More, please,” I request.

“No, no. That’s enough for you, love. Lie there and enjoy and I will get you cleaned up.” He glances up at Zac. “I will tend you after.”

“No need. Just take care of her.”

“She will be fine,” Mossy assures him. “She’s a strong human.”

“And feeling a little high,” I tell them. Zac tightens his arms around me and I wiggle delightedly. I grasp his hand and bring it to my bare breast, sighing when he gives an almost silent groan.

Mossy laughs. “Indeed you are, but the fierce man holding you might bend you over his knee if you don’t behave.”

I grin at him. “I can only hope.”

We giggle together as Zac sighs and shakes his head. “Both of you behave,” he growls. And as though he’s unable to help himself, he squeezes my breast, then runs his thumb over my stiff nipple before he takes his hand away.

Now it’s my turn to groan, and it’s not quiet. I’m euphoric, and maybe for the first time in my life I’m full of joy. Maybe the shock to the back of my head has shaken something loose in there and has made me a normal person.
